Moon Water and Full Moon Rituals

Moon Water and Full Moon Rituals

Let’s talk about the moon.

Why? Well, partly because of my M/M paranormal romance novel Bold as Brass, I’m finding topics that relate to some of the main flavors in the novel. Like the moon.

In the book, Liam Monroe gets his powers from the moon. He can see where the moon shines and manipulate shadows at night. He also engages in some unique and kinky moon rituals. But we’ll get into that more later.

He’s also strongest whenever the moon is strongest, so a full moon gives him the most power. The same powers as a fictional wizard in a book may not be possible, but there are plenty of people who do try tapping into the moon’s power, especially on the full moon.

One way to tap into the moon’s energy is with moon water. Do not confuse this with moonshine. They are both drinkable, but with very different results.

Moon Water

Moon water is basically what it sounds like. Water that the moon has shined down upon, which charges the water with some of the moon’s energy.

This practice has apparently existed for a very long time and is certainly legit because it even became a TikTok craze. Okay maybe not, but given that the moon does control the tides, it isn’t totally crazy to draw a connection between the moon and water.

All you need to do is set out some water under a full moon or place a jar of water in a windowsill where the moonlight can reach it. Those who practice witchcraft have some strong opinions on whether the water has to be outside or whether there can be a lid on the jar, but if you’re just doing this for fun, I say you do whatever works for you.

Moon water can be used for anything regular water can, though some common uses are for cleansing and revitalization like taking a bath, watering plants, cleaning, or making tea.

Inside Bold as Brass
Lots of people do full moon rituals to recharge and welcome a new phase in life, though Liam Monroe does things a little differently in Bold as Brass. His rituals still work around moon phases, but they involve power exchange and are decidedly dirtier than simply celebrating the moon’s journey across the sky.

When Oliver Brass doesn’t feel deserving of his powers and they become out of control, he turns to Liam for help. He’s never done anything so bold as putting someone else in charge of his body and his magic before, but nothing else is working and he’s drawn to the sinful things the professor/dominant is offering.

In this scene, Liam and Oliver are starting a ritual under the moon. They’re making candles for the ritual and setting up how their arrangement will work. Basically, Oliver is giving up control and Liam is taking it.

Oliver

Maybe I feel it in the air or in the soft moonlight beginning to trickle in from the skylight. There’s a power here and we only need to shape and draw it out.

I go for the obvious, taking the coil of brass from my table and starting to wrap a thin strip around my candle. “I pledge to give you control of my metal magic.” The words feel like a vow. “I promise to use my magic how you direct me and to refrain when not given permission.”

“I accept the authority for use of your metal magic.” Liam wraps a length of dark twine around his own candle. “From the start of this waxing moon cycle until the next cycle of the waxing moon, I must give you permission in order to use the magic.”

It’s not magic I feel now, only the weight of the words and his eyes on me. I shiver in expectation of the promises there. This is why I came to him.

“I pledge to give you control of my body. I will let you dictate our, our, um, sexual activity.”

“I accept.” Liam responds swiftly. He seems excited. “I will make decisions for both of us sexually. I’ll give you orders.”

“And I will obey,” I whisper.

“Honestly, my imagination has been running wild. Any reasonable magic usage may be asked of you, like we agreed, but right now? It’s looking like there will be a lot of sexual commands. There are so many perverted uses for your magic, and I’d like to explore as many of them as we can.”

I focus on wrapping red thread around my candle as I respond, “N-not, that’s not a problem.”

“Good,” says Liam. He doesn’t continue.

I remind him, “That’s not all we talked about.”

“I know, but why don’t you tell me anyway?” Liam enjoys this too much. “You need to say it, Oliver.”

“You will also control when I come,” I whisper, face bright red. “Control whether I come at all.”

My heart is pounding in my chest and my cock stirs in anticipation as I offer up this gift to Liam. His eyes grow even darker and he accepts without hesitation.

“That’s right. Your every orgasm is mine to give or withhold. For the most part, expect that you aren’t getting off or using your metal magic unless I’m there. When I say, you can use your power and come.”

“Well, one or the other.”

Liam starts to nod and agree, then he stops. “You know what? Let’s make the two exclusive.”

“What?”

“You aren’t going to come at all unless I give you permission. And anytime you do, you’re going to be using metal magic before, during, or after.” Even in the dark, I see his eyes light up. “Oh, I like this idea. I like this a lot.” But he shakes his head and clears his throat a second later. “Question is, what about you? If you don’t think you can handle that, tell me. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s best to tell me now.”

“Um, what if I can’t?”

“Then you can’t.” He gives me a soft smile, no judgment or pressure. “This is what I want. I think it’s within your power to give me, but I could be wrong. And if I am wrong, that’s not your fault. I just need to know. I only want what you’re willing to give.”

He seemed dark and dirty a second ago and now he’s softly looking into my eyes and making me feel safe, how does he do that?

I already know he’s the kind of man who honors what he says. That means he won’t begrudge any limits I need to set. If I say no right now, the person most disappointed… will be me.

“No, I…I want to try,” I tell him. “I know I need to use my powers and get them to cooperate but that’s still the part I’m least looking forward to. This way gives me something to look forward to when using the magic. I’d like to try. Is that enough?”

Liam smiles. “Darling, it is more than enough.”

My head spins as we cover the rest smoothly and finish the candle. By the time we’re finished, I’m hard and aching in my pants. I feel the moon grow stronger, its power pulsing around us but not touching us yet. I’m so eager to feel it, to offer myself up to its power and Liam’s.

The empty space between us fills with moonlight, shining brightly, right down through the spotlight as we make our final pledges.

“Let my intentions become manifest under the light of the moon and its magic.”

We both speak the incantation and step into the skylight with our candles. Both candles light, fire glowing from the wicks like the moonlight is a flame that ignited them.

When we touch the candles together, both candles go out and smoke swirls around us. Liam’s eyes glow and I feel his power, feel the intention behind our words gaining the conviction and weight of magic.

It’s done. Until the next waxing moon cycle, I’m his.

Bold as Brass

Oliver Brass is proud to follow family tradition and become a metal wizard. For about two seconds. Then his family’s good name is tarnished by crime and scandal, leaving Oliver confused and betrayed. When his powers start rebelling against him, a friendly professor could help. But the teacher’s illicit extracurricular activities are what truly captive the metal mage.

A charming professor by day and a wicked dom by night, Liam Monroe has the unique ability to control a person’s body and magic. Surrendering to the sexy older man could be exactly what Oliver needs, as long as he keeps his feelings at bay and remembers their arrangement is supposed to be temporary.

Everything seems to be going well, until dragons with a score to settle attack and threaten both men. Oliver must rely on his magic if he has any hope of stopping the vengeful dragons… or keeping Liam.

Can Oliver be bold enough to fight for the man he loves, or will it all go up in flames?

The Strongest Paranormal Predators

The Strongest Paranormal Predators

Who is the toughest predator in paranormal romance novels?

The paranormal world is full of fearsome monsters and super strong creatures. That’s the cool part of writing M/M in this genre. Anything is possible.

So, who are the contenders for being the toughest? There are the werewolves with sharp fangs and rock solid abs howling at the moon. Or vampires, pale beauties who are strong and deadly and somehow make drinking blood seductive. And wizards who can shape the world with a snap of their fingers.

And in addition to being powerful, these supernatural men also happen to be incredibly sexy for some reason. Maybe because I write paranormal romance.

Which one is strongest? Which wouldn’t you want to meet in a dark alley? Which one would you like to take home with you? That’s up for debate.

For me, it’s hard to beat an alpha werewolf that will destroy all obstacles to protect their mate. (Again, I read and write paranormal romance. No surprise that alpha werewolf ranks as the strongest for me.)

But do you know what’s truly scary? Lightning. Like real, actual lightning. Not sure an alpha werewolf could stand up to it, to be honest. This is something I learned when writing my magical novel, Strikes Twice. The two leading men will have their work cut out for them if they want to overcome magical lightning and find a happy ending together.

Why is lightning such a worthy adversary?

While the novel deals with lightning and the elements in a more magical and fictional way, I got curious and did some research. Since I’m not actually trying to make you terrified of leaving the house, I went with two very scary sounding lightning facts:

  • Lightning bolts can get five times hotter than the sun.
  • Lightning moves about 30,000 times faster than a bullet.

But don’t freak out. You’d think something hotter than the freaking sun and faster than a bullet would be ultra lethal, but it hurts more people than it kills. And not many people actually get struck by lightning.

The main reason to worry would be, for instance, if you were an air wizard who needed to stay away from electricity and lightning magic, but you found yourself getting closer and closer to a cursed man whose skin could zap you. Obviously, this very specific scenario comes from the novel Strikes Twice.

They say lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice. But when it comes to love and magical curses, all bets are off. Our main character Marty Russo is a determined wizard trying to solve an electrical curse. Azure ‘Az’ Serrano has basically given up hope when his magical affliction makes touch impossible.

Is love stronger than a curse? The novel features enemies to lovers, magic, shifters, and steamy scenes.(P.S. for some of the steamy scenes, Marty and Az weren’t able to touch. This turned out to be a lot of fun to write and I hope you enjoy these moments too.) Here’s the cover and book description.

When lightning strikes, can love thunder back?

Marty Russo doesn’t need wings to fly. As an air wizard, he can soar through the clouds with his magic. He needs a purpose when coming back down to earth, so Marty agrees to help a man with a debilitating electric curse. But solving this impossible hex isn’t nearly as challenging as keeping his hands off Azure “Az” Serrano.

Az is difficult. Anyone would be, after six years of zapping anyone they touch with a painful electrical charge. Yet Marty didn’t need to touch Az to feel a jolt; he’s drawn to the passionate man underneath the leather jacket and guarded exterior.

But getting too close physically could land Marty in the hospital, or worse, because electricity is especially dangerous to air casters. As their emotional connection grows stronger, the temptation does as well.

Will Marty be able to free Az, or will the curse strike him down first?

Strikes Twice can be read by itself, though this is the second novel in my Elementally Yours series where casters devote themselves to one type of elemental magic. (They also fall in love with hot men.) And if you haven’t checked out the free novella associated with this series, you can get Circuits and Sparks here.

Secrets, secrets

Secrets, secrets

High school is complicated. Especially when you start pretending to date a guy in secret, for totally legitimate reasons, and then just when the whole thing might blow over, the secret is out and then you have to keep pretending to date the guy for… slightly less legitimate reasons.

This is a moment from One Little Word, part of the One Crazy Love Story Box Set.

~

Ryan

“I guess our secret fake relationship is now just a regular old fake relationship.” I said instead. I sighed dramatically. “We’re losing the magic already, darling.”

Luke laughed. He changed the subject to something else. I allowed his happy voice to cast away my doubts.

My second kiss with the blond had been no less surprising than the first. I never had time to prepare, so that’s why his lips always caught me off guard and stole my breath away.

The setting for this embrace had been even less ideal than the first. There had been many people watching us and we were both super tense. Yet the moment still made me want to do nothing but kiss him over and over again. Crap.

Maybe things were always weird

Maybe things were always weird

One Little Word involves pretend boyfriends, secret fake relationships, regular fake relationships, and actual feelings. All of this refers to one couple. In One Little Lie, there are secret relationships and fake relationships. Luke is one of the parties involved in both scenarios, but there are three people and two different relationships. I’m not sure why, but when talking about pretend dating scenarios, I like making everything sound as complicated as possible.

In one sense, I suppose fake dating is complicated enough. But if you like fake dating stories, then you like the kind of extra drama that can only happen in romcoms.

If you haven’t read One Little Word, no worries. One, it’s included in a box set with One Little Lie. And two, Ryan will also get you up to speed:

It started when an idiot from the baseball team (Luke Chambers) got himself in trouble. There was foul language, high stakes, dire consequences, and then… things got weird. The idiot, being an idiot, decided the best way to get out of the mess he created involved pretending to date me.

Wait, Luke’s moroncy aside, the whole thing worked out great for me. The broken leg sucked, but I healed, and now I had an awesome hottie boyfriend.

New M/M box set!

New M/M box set!

Completing a box set for the One More Thing Series has been on my to-do list for a long time. Finally, I can cross it off. Check out this four book bundle for the first four books in the series.

A straight jock thought it was all pretend… until he started to fall for the gay school nerd. Will romance be his best play yet?
Seventeen-year-old Luke Chambers has what every small-town boy desires: a car, varsity jacket, and phone numbers from all the pretty girls. But when a stupid mistake and zero-tolerance teacher could cost the popular pitcher everything, his only hope of redemption involves playing pretend with the school’s biggest loser.

Ryan Miller is sick of being bullied for his sexuality. And his town’s most-admired athlete represents almost everything the smart-mouthed geek hates. So when the guy proposes a fake relationship, he’s not sure cuddling up to a gorgeous straight boy will amount to anything except a huge disaster.

When sparks fly, Luke struggles with confusing feelings even as the sarcastic scientist tries to openly humiliate him. But as Ryan starts to fall for the softer, authentic side of the baseball player, he can’t decipher what’s real and what’s make-believe when their public displays of affection hit far too close to home…

One Little Word starts the One More Thing series when a clueless athlete and witty nerd go from enemies to fake boyfriends and begin an adventure that may change their lives forever.

Review: Realigned by Becca Seymour

Review: Realigned by Becca Seymour

While the title of this blog is Hella Gay YA, I’ve never been good at staying on topic. And as an author of gay romances, I figure the important part is ‘gay’ anyway. So I’m going to share my thoughts on the novella Realigned by Becca Seymour.

The cover needs a special shout-out. GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS COVER. Yes, I needed to say it three times because it can’t be said enough. BEAUTIFUL, GORGEOUS COVER. Especially in the gay romance genre, this is one of my favorite covers ever.

Quick Summary: When Shaun returns home to the Australian outback, he must decide what to do when his vacation ends, either go back to his life in the United States or stay and start a relationship with police officer Mitch.

Tropes and Book Details: best friends, friends to lovers, small town romance, second chance, short story, contemporary, sweet, steamy

My thoughts: Realigned is fun, fast novella if you want a cute read with a little steam. This is one of the books I picked up in a giveaway and I’m glad I got the opportunity as I hadn’t ready any Becca Seymour before, but it won’t be the last book I read from her.

Plot: Some old author guy once said ‘you can’t go home again,’ but eight years is a pretty long time to stay away. So Shaun returns to the small-town he left behind, his loving family, and the best friend he’s always wanted more from. And if their relationship evolves, can he be convinced to turn his vacation into a permanent change of address?

This is the question the plot revolves around, but it’s more there in the background while the focus is on the relationship between the guys. And their relationship is the best part, so this works out just fine. There is some drama about how Shaun left and revelations from the past, but most of the angst is in the past.

Characters: When people say it’s not rocket science, they aren’t talking to Shaun because he is a rocket scientist. Yet it’s the heart he has trouble with. Isn’t that the way it goes? And also, I am not a rocket scientist, so I’m not totally sure about his job. He works for NASA and does something with the earth, but I’m rounding to ‘rocket scientist’ anyway.

Shaun’s childhood best friend Mitch is a sexy sweetheart who put Shaun’s own happiness first in the past, but now thinks they can be happy together. What else could you want from a fictional boyfriend?

Quote about Mitch

Both grew up in a small Australian community that feels authentic to me and will to you too, unless you are actually from a small Australian community, and then I can’t say whether the experience will ring true for you, but it’s probably close enough for a short story.

Final thoughts: For me, this story is super interesting, very cute, and even a bit steamy. It’s an entertaining read from start to finish. If you enjoy reading standalone novellas about sexy dudes with Australian accents, best friends becoming more, or gay romance in general, you’re good to go and will love every second.

I’m the person who finds something good and wants more of it, so I wish the book was longer, but I also think that’s the mark of a quality story when you’re left wanting more. And as someone who takes forever to read, I do see the value of shorter fiction, though this one felt more like a snippet than totally complete to me. So the perfect time to read this is when you’re in the mood for a quick, feel-good read.

Quote from the book

Meet Mason Lewis

Meet Mason Lewis

Mason Lewis is one of the main characters in Black Cats and Bad Luck. While magic exists in his world, it’s not really part of his life growing up. Except for one thing. He’s been dreaming of his true love for as long as he can remember. The same visitor keeps appearing when he sleeps, a boy with black hair and green eyes. He grows up along with Mason. His name is Horatio.

Mason is eager to meet Horatio, though he tells himself the waiting makes the whole thing sweeter. It will all be worth it one day. Even if the guy is nowhere to be found and Horatio isn’t the most common name. He’s lucky. Not everyone gets this. The surety, the knowledge that their other half is out there somewhere, a comfort telling them to hold on because he’s not here yet but he’s coming. One day. He’ll hold the dreams close to his heart until he can hold the guy in his arms.

When the novel starts, the years have passed and things have changed. Mason is a 23-year-old who stopped waiting for Horatio. The death of his father put things in perspective and made him realize that the life he lives with his eyes open is most important.

The excerpt below comes from a scene where Mason is talking to his best friend Miranda about his strange dreams. They’ve become more frequent, which he doesn’t like.

I leveled with Miranda. “Look at us now. You’re about to be a High Priestess. I’ve got a great job lined up and a serious girlfriend. We’re downright stable and well-adjusted. When we first met, did you ever think we would get here? If past-you could see you now, what would you think?”

“Impossible,” she answered quietly. “I’d call this impossible.”

Miranda and I met in the Dead Parents Club. That was what we called our old support group. I lost my dad while both her parents were gone. If the ‘dead parents’ nickname sounded dark, the reality was even worse. As sullen, maladjusted teens, we sat on folding chairs in a church basement, scowling at everything and sobbing at the unfairness of the world in turns, trying to make sense of grief.

For a long time, I wanted to hurt. Screw moving on and healthy coping and whatever else the counselor talked about. Then I just wanted to breathe easier without every inhale feeling so labored, a near impossibility dragged from my lungs.

Somehow, I did get past the grief. I was doing better than I ever would have imagined. So maybe Horatio and I shared some impossible connection, but what I accomplished in the waking world seemed impossible too. My dad had been gone for close to a decade, which was a long time in some regards. And also not very long. I never thought I’d be able to pick up the pieces by this time.

“I need this, Miranda,” I said. “Because there’s always this thing, if not holding me back then holding me in place. I’m ready to go on. I need to go on.”

There was this moment not too long ago. My apprenticeship was wrapping up and there were two potential jobs waiting for me. The first one was a side project Miranda and I started on a whim a few years ago and could turn into a full-time business. The other was a position with an established home building company. The latter meant moving away, but a fresh start wouldn’t be so bad, and I was getting serious with Rachel. The future never looked better. Maybe I have things under control, I thought. I’m really going to be alright. That was when the dreams started again.

At the heart of every dream, the problem was the same. I desperately desired someone who didn’t exist, someone I never really met. The dreams had too much power over me. It felt like they could destroy everything I worked so hard for.

Former Feline Familiars (is this a tongue twister?)

Former Feline Familiars (is this a tongue twister?)

For my new novel and series, I put together some posts that are an introduction to the world and characters of Black Cats and Bad Luck. This paranormal romance is available for free. It’s a new adult gay romance about magic, familiars, dreams, and monsters.

One of the main characters is Horatio, a former familiar who is seeking his true love. You know how shapeshifters are a hot trend in fiction now? This is kind of like that, except it only works in one direction and only once. He spent some time in cat form, though he isn’t really a cat. Because when I try to write shapeshifters, apparently my brain cooperates to a point and then does its own thing.

In this scene, Horatio meets up with the young witch he lived and worked with, her older brother Avery, and his friend Jonah.

~

Avery

“Horatio is a cat.” I went over the facts, seeking comfort from them. “He eats from a black dish with little stars decorating the outside. He gets hair all over my pillows, he smacks me in the face with his tail. Because he’s a cat, our—”

“I hope you weren’t going to say pet,” he interrupted sternly.

“He’s right, Avery,” Stella said. Great, they were both glaring at me. “We don’t own him, we never did.”

Rubbing my face with both hands, I groaned. What the hell I did not even believe in? What the hell? All I could say was, “He’s not Horatio.”

“I am Horatio,” the guy argued.

“And you were lonely, so you followed us here?” And also grew human parts.

“No, you’re where I need to be, and I can sense you strongly. You’re my bridge between worlds.”

Not sure what to do with that, I only weakly said, “Horatio is a cat.”

“I was,” he agreed. “But no longer.”

Everyone had gone insane. I did not have enough sanity on my own to bring them all back to reality. So I did the only thing I could. I gave up, falling back on the bed, closing my eyes, and wishing the world a fond farewell. It would have to get along without me.

“Oh my god.” Jonah laughed. “Awesome! Are you serious?”

Distantly, a reasonable part of myself tried to mount a defense. It argued I shouldn’t allow a naked, possibly deranged guy to waltz in here just because he guessed the name of our cat.

If anyone else showed up out of nowhere buck-naked claiming to be a family pet, or a rough equivalent, they would be full of shit. But this guy? I believed him. While the shape of him changed, he was still Horatio.
