The Strongest Paranormal Predators

The Strongest Paranormal Predators

Who is the toughest predator in paranormal romance novels?

The paranormal world is full of fearsome monsters and super strong creatures. That’s the cool part of writing M/M in this genre. Anything is possible.

So, who are the contenders for being the toughest? There are the werewolves with sharp fangs and rock solid abs howling at the moon. Or vampires, pale beauties who are strong and deadly and somehow make drinking blood seductive. And wizards who can shape the world with a snap of their fingers.

And in addition to being powerful, these supernatural men also happen to be incredibly sexy for some reason. Maybe because I write paranormal romance.

Which one is strongest? Which wouldn’t you want to meet in a dark alley? Which one would you like to take home with you? That’s up for debate.

For me, it’s hard to beat an alpha werewolf that will destroy all obstacles to protect their mate. (Again, I read and write paranormal romance. No surprise that alpha werewolf ranks as the strongest for me.)

But do you know what’s truly scary? Lightning. Like real, actual lightning. Not sure an alpha werewolf could stand up to it, to be honest. This is something I learned when writing my magical novel, Strikes Twice. The two leading men will have their work cut out for them if they want to overcome magical lightning and find a happy ending together.

Why is lightning such a worthy adversary?

While the novel deals with lightning and the elements in a more magical and fictional way, I got curious and did some research. Since I’m not actually trying to make you terrified of leaving the house, I went with two very scary sounding lightning facts:

  • Lightning bolts can get five times hotter than the sun.
  • Lightning moves about 30,000 times faster than a bullet.

But don’t freak out. You’d think something hotter than the freaking sun and faster than a bullet would be ultra lethal, but it hurts more people than it kills. And not many people actually get struck by lightning.

The main reason to worry would be, for instance, if you were an air wizard who needed to stay away from electricity and lightning magic, but you found yourself getting closer and closer to a cursed man whose skin could zap you. Obviously, this very specific scenario comes from the novel Strikes Twice.

They say lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice. But when it comes to love and magical curses, all bets are off. Our main character Marty Russo is a determined wizard trying to solve an electrical curse. Azure ‘Az’ Serrano has basically given up hope when his magical affliction makes touch impossible.

Is love stronger than a curse? The novel features enemies to lovers, magic, shifters, and steamy scenes.(P.S. for some of the steamy scenes, Marty and Az weren’t able to touch. This turned out to be a lot of fun to write and I hope you enjoy these moments too.) Here’s the cover and book description.

When lightning strikes, can love thunder back?

Marty Russo doesn’t need wings to fly. As an air wizard, he can soar through the clouds with his magic. He needs a purpose when coming back down to earth, so Marty agrees to help a man with a debilitating electric curse. But solving this impossible hex isn’t nearly as challenging as keeping his hands off Azure “Az” Serrano.

Az is difficult. Anyone would be, after six years of zapping anyone they touch with a painful electrical charge. Yet Marty didn’t need to touch Az to feel a jolt; he’s drawn to the passionate man underneath the leather jacket and guarded exterior.

But getting too close physically could land Marty in the hospital, or worse, because electricity is especially dangerous to air casters. As their emotional connection grows stronger, the temptation does as well.

Will Marty be able to free Az, or will the curse strike him down first?

Strikes Twice can be read by itself, though this is the second novel in my Elementally Yours series where casters devote themselves to one type of elemental magic. (They also fall in love with hot men.) And if you haven’t checked out the free novella associated with this series, you can get Circuits and Sparks here.

Book Review: The Nøkk and The Jock

Book Review: The Nøkk and The Jock

If you’re looking for a slice of life romance that involves a jock, a mysterious monster, and plenty of water-related shenanigans, then The Nøkk and The Jock might just be your next favorite read.

Summary: Brandon is an eager human who becomes one of the first students at the monster-filled Creelin University. His excitement quickly takes a turn when he discovers that his new roommate, a moody nøkk, a type of water spirit, is avoiding him. As Brandon tries to befriend his enigmatic roommate, he might accidentally use a bottle of vodka and a spider to initiate an ancient bonding ritual.

Nøkk Folklore: Dive into Norwegian Monsters

What’s particularly interesting about The Nøkk and The Jock is how it weaves in elements of Norwegian folklore. Nøkks are water spirits known for their powerful and often deceptive nature, and I love getting a look at the supernatural myths in other cultures. Nokks tend to drown people, but it’s not so simple for the monster in this story.

And one funny little detail I enjoyed was that the nøkk had a relative who was a rowboat, which is a very excellent strategy if you’re trying to drown someone and steal their soul.

Sweet Romance Amid Emo Vibes

This book is just absolutely adorable. A very sweet romance despite the emo vibes and threat of death.

It’s a cute little slice of life romance where both guys love the water and try not to fall for each other. When thrown together as roommates, the nokk and jock quickly want to be more than friends but the jock thinks he’s straight and the nokk is worried about stealing the jock’s soul.

The jock Brandon goes through a bi-awakening as he looks after his gloomy roommate and accidentally courts him. The nokk known as Steve has many issues, like being afraid to show his true form, and joining the swim team may not be the best idea when he’s worried about drowning people with his powers, but it all works out in the end. Brandon’s sunny outlook and Steve’s more moody demeanor makes for a great dynamic.

The Playlist: A Perfect Musical Accompaniment

And let’s not forget the fantastic playlist! Featuring tracks from My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, K.Flay, and AWOLNATION, I love the bonus playlist and it has some awesome alternative songs.

Author Leslie McAdam said her teenager created an ‘emo Norwegian boy playlist’ and apparently I am an emo Norwegian boy because the songs fit my musical tastes very well. I had no idea. Can I speak Norwegian now?

To celebrate the upcoming release of my new M/M paranormal romance The Werewolf’s Heart on May 9, here’s a quote from the novel.

This assignment was full of challenges. Like me going undercover as a suburban homeowner, posing as an ‘average’ lone werewolf among humans. My interests included grisly murders, supernatural victims or suspects, and bringing killers to justice.
Now? I needed to blend in. Live a normal life. Whatever the hell that meant.
It sounded kinda like torture. Then I met him.

The difference between house and home

The difference between house and home

Aaron is an eager young homeowner who wants to make his first home perfect in The Werewolf’s Heart. But he’s missing one vital ingredient. Here’s a quote from the novel to celebrate the book’s release on May 9.

This was my first real home ever. Or it would be one day, but there was one thing missing.

Taking stock of my finances when preparing to invest in a home and piling up my possessions put things into perspective and allowed me to evaluate my life. While largely on the right track, the romance department left a gaping hole in my otherwise promising future.

What would really make my new house feel like a home was the right man to share it with.

You can pre-order this M/M paranormal romance now! Check it out here.

When a werewolf’s heart belongs to a man in danger, how far will a supernatural detective go to save the one he loves?

Aaron Honeywell has almost everything he needs to turn his new house into a home, except for the right man to share it with. His sexy new neighbor Meritt seems like just the guy until he saves Aaron from a handsy stranger with glowing eyes, revealing that he’s more than man—he’s a werewolf.

Meritt Slate has worked some challenging cases before, but this is a whole other level of difficulty. The detective is stuck undercover in suburbia to lure out whoever is abducting werewolves. And his alluring neighbor is quite the distraction. Fighting his desires and doing his job has never been a problem before, but it’s possible he’s finally found someone worth settling down for.

But the dangers lurking outside their cozy street are getting closer to home. Kidnapping shifters is just the beginning of a sinister magical plot that may require Aaron’s help to succeed… whether he’s willing to provide it or not. Can the werewolf protect his heart or will evil forces shatter it forever?

Our fair spaz

Our fair spaz

Best friendships are often tested as people age. This is doubly true when one person is a confused, possibly bisexual athlete and the other is a self-involved diva who hates serious discussions. Even worse, they both liked the same guy.

In this scene, Luke tries to clear the air with his best friend while Zach tries to avoid the conversation as always. This is from One Little Lie, where a clueless athlete learns the world is more than just gay or straight in this coming of age love story about secret relationships, friendship, and bisexuality.

~

Luke

I rarely understood the way his brain worked. There was only one thing I needed to be sure about.

“You and Ryan seem friendly again,” I commented casually.

“Yep.” He kept his eyes on the road. Okay, he should keep doing that as he was driving.

“Cool. Great.” They should definitely get along. As long as it was only friendship. “You’re over Ryan, right?”

“No, Luke,” he replied dryly. “Let us commence a fight to the death to win the hand of our fair spaz.”

“Okay, you were joking for most of that, but you said no, so it’s no, right?”

“If I really wanted him, you wouldn’t stand a chance—”

“Not sure that’s true since—” I already had Ryan. He picked me.

“Which must mean I don’t want him.”

“Awesome.”

M/M Paranormal Romance Novel Review: The Alpha’s Warlock by Eliot Grayson

M/M Paranormal Romance Novel Review: The Alpha’s Warlock by Eliot Grayson

Quick summary: An amateur warlock must make an impossible choice: mate or die. The former doesn’t sound so bad when tying himself to a gorgeous tough alpha… who hates his guts. Is die still on the table? Possibly, if their enemies get their way.

Overall Impression: This enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance is right up my alley, so I LOVED IT SO MUCH and highly recommend. Lots of ‘I hate you but you’re hot’ and snarking at each other even during life-threatening situations, their need to bicker is so strong.

Rating: five out five magical socks (or ten if they’re in pairs)

The enemy of my enemy

Nate has lots of potential, but his father siphoned away and controlled his magic when he was alive. The young warlock is a relatively late bloomer, still learning to use gifts. The story starts when a fun night out got him kidnapped and nearly bonded to a member of the Kimball pack. He seeks help from their neighboring rivals, the Armitages.

Except their help requires more than borrowing a cup of sugar or hiding out in their territory. The mating bond process has already been started on his end and he needs to complete it or he’ll die.

Nate already knows his potential new mate, which is part of the problem. He is incredibly sure Ian despises him and has always despised him. Ian used to glare daggers at him when they were kids, and he’s drawn to yet also on guard against the tight-lipped wolf. And if you don’t know where this is going, you will probably be able to tell when you read it. So I don’t wanna spoil, and even if it is a bit predictable, let’s just say that when they clear things up I wasn’t surprised, but I still found it very satisfying and well-done.

At least buy me dinner first

This is an enemies to lovers story on steroids as the enemies are forced not only to have sex but bind their souls together. Undoing it is technically possible but not exactly easy or pleasant. The ‘fuck or die’ trope naturally comes with implied consent issues, though I would say both people don’t want Nate to die and are as on board as they can be given the circumstances.

In fact, the sex part is simple. Or should I say totally scorching hot and delicious because it is very damn good smut, a+ steamy scenes. The other parts give them more issues, as they’re suddenly living with a stranger who maybe hates you and they’re forced to get along and work together while sinister forces conspire against them.

There’s a fair bit of angst with their feelings, which I adored, but even if you don’t enjoy angst the main character Nate is full of humor and snark. Such a witty protagonist, he builds the drama one moment then has me cracking up. This was the first novel I read where sprinting through the woods and evading pursuers turns into a piggyback ride, which is honestly a travesty since this scene is delightful as hell. And Nate is lucky he barely has to search for shoes because he can craft the perfect footwear with his powers. It pays to be a witch with magical powers. How do I make this happen?

From the Novel

The Alpha’s Warlock

Cursed, mated, and in for the fight of their lives…

Warlock Nate Hawthorne just wants a cup of coffee. Is that too much to ask? Apparently. Because instead of precious caffeine, all he gets is cursed by a pack of werewolves who want to use him for his magic. Now the only way to fix the damage is a mate bond to a grumpy and oh-so-sexy alpha in the rival pack, who happens to hate him. This is so not how he wanted to start his day.

Ian Armitage never intended to take Nate as his mate. The Hawthorne family can’t be trusted. Ian knows that better than anyone. The fact that he’s lusted after the way-too-gorgeous man for years? Totally irrelevant. Ian’s just doing what is necessary to protect his pack. This whole mating arrangement has nothing to do with love and never will. That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

Nate and Ian will have to work together if they have any hope of staving off the pack’s enemies and averting disaster. That’s assuming they can stop arguing (and keep their hands off each other) long enough to save the day…

The Alpha’s Warlock is an explicit M/M paranormal romance featuring a snarky warlock, a brooding alpha werewolf, knotting, enchanted socks (long story), and a guaranteed happily ever after. This series does not contain mpreg.

How to be Luke, a thing Luke is wondering

How to be Luke, a thing Luke is wondering

Luke is a regular guy living in a small town, and bisexuality is way too complicated for him to understand. Or at least, he’s having trouble understanding it. But that’s probably because he’s not bi. He’s only liked one guy before, his boyfriend Ryan. And Luke is currently avoiding his best friend Zach after catching the other guy making out with some dude at a party and being turned on. Anyway.

Anyway, Luke often inadvertently goes to the scariest teacher at his school for advice. Even though she’s super scary, she’s also smart and a lesbian. So this a deleted scene from One Little Lie where he does just that.

~

Luke

Overall, Ryan was probably a good influence in my life. But in this regard, he corrupted me as I completely skipped homeroom. I just didn’t feel like going. That was my story and I was sticking to it. Until I turned down a hallway and saw Zach heading my way and ducked into the nearest classroom before he saw me.

I looked around and found myself in Mrs. Sharp’s classroom. Okay, fine. This was an appropriate punishment; I deserved this. And while I didn’t have Zach to talk to at the moment, I had Ryan. Who I told everything, even though I wasn’t sure if this was the relevant information he wanted or not. And I felt weird talking about it, so I mostly explained through emojis, like two guys, lips, an eggplant, and a bunch of question marks. The important thing was that I tried to communicate. A for effort and all that.

So, I wasn’t being a coward. I was still making steps forward. I wasn’t hiding anymore.

I mean. I was hiding from Zach. Literally. I wasn’t metaphorically hiding.

And Mrs. Sharp had said she was around to talk. I couldn’t tell her the whole thing, but she probably had helpful advice underneath the scariness. She’d been a lesbian and living in this town for a long time. She didn’t have a class and peered at me dubiously after I barged in.

She seemed almost amused by my entrance at first until I just stared at her and she just stared at me and then I got the feeling every moment I wasted her time was a moment she would make me suffer for later, so I had to get right to it.

I meant to ask something helpful and important but instead I went with, “Do you like that drag race show?”

She paused for a moment, not expecting that. At least it was so unexpected she forgot about her wrath. I am such an accidental genius. “What kind of question is that?”

I sighed and hung my head. “Of course you like it.” Everyone gay liked it. And I—

She smiled. “Actually, I don’t.”

“Really?”

“My wife says I should love it.” She smiled just thinking about her wife, then her expression turned wry. “But it’s a bunch of grownups acting catty and immature. I already deal with a bunch of teenagers being catty and immature, why do I need more of that in my life?”

“But you’re—” I fidgeted. “I mean…”

“Luke, there is no one way to be gay.” She sounded way more patient discussing this than she did when trying to explain Gulliver’s Travels to our class. There wasn’t a lot of adults I could talk to about this so that was kinda nice.

“I know that,” I said because I’d heard that before. But maybe that was different than knowing it.

“You can know something in the abstract but the reality is different.” Yeah, what she said.

But I had to make sure that, “We’re still talking about the same thing right and you haven’t started on a lesson about the Lilliputians or Houyhnhnms? Because reading that once was enough.” Those were tiny people and talking horses in reality but in the abstract represented other things. It was satire, I got that, but couldn’t it just be a good story without having to mean something?

She raised an eyebrow. “Did you read the material or find a summary online?”

“Um, can we get back to the subject?” I totally started the reading… then I just found a summary online.

“Which is what?” she asked with a smirk. “Drag Race?”

“I guess.” I put my hands in my pockets and looked down. Oh hell. “I wanted to talk to an adult before my parents,” I admitted. “Someone who will tell me it’s all gonna be alright.”

“I can’t promise you that,” she spoke gently again and didn’t look scary at all. “But you will face whatever happens,” she said like it was a fact.

“How can I tell them when I don’t even know if I fit?”

“There’s nothing to fit.” When she saw I wasn’t sure about that, she thought about it and continued with, “Alright, how about this? Don’t think of it as adding something new to your life and trying to make room for it. It’s already part of you, so it already fits.” Now she might as well be talking about Gulliver’s Travels again.

I shook my head. “But it’s not, I didn’t even, um.” I suddenly remembered that I couldn’t tell her this whole thing took me by surprise. “I don’t know.” It hadn’t been a part of me until I pulled Ryan into my life.

She seemed to get enough of what I meant anyway. “When or how you discovered this part of yourself isn’t relevant. This aspect of your personality was something you haven’t noticed before, I take it, but that doesn’t mean it hadn’t been there all along.”

“Hmm.” That was… I don’t know. I guess that meant that this didn’t have to change who I was. Was that really possible? Or maybe some changes were okay, but they didn’t change who I was because this was who I was all along? That was kinda a nice thought.

I wasn’t disappointing anyone by being this way, I couldn’t do anything to change it. It was just who I was. Things had changed because I realized something about myself, but I hadn’t changed. I guess.

“That’s it?” She asked after a moment. “No denial, bargaining? Insults?”

“I can definitely insult you if you want,” I responded immediately before I remembered I was talking to a teacher about this and not Zach. “Uh, I mean… I don’t know just, yeah. That’s something to think about.”

I had so many thing to think about. Still, that wasn’t the worst conversation in the world. I didn’t know if I quite believed her entirely, but it was a little reassuring. I didn’t have to like drag queens who weren’t really racing. I didn’t have to start wearing feather boas. I could change, but I didn’t have to change.

Still, I felt like a blank canvas or maybe a chalkboard, everything else had been wiped away. What happened next was up to me. I could put the same stuff back on the board. Or do something new or some combination of the two. I could just be me.  The only problem was that I wasn’t totally sure who that was at the moment.

Trick Questions?

Trick Questions?

A 16-year old boy in a boring city ponders his place in the universe in my coming-of-age novel Invisi-bi-lity. Or at least he wonders about the important things in his universe. Namely, who he is and who he loves. John has some ideas but isn’t totally sure. He could be bi or he might just love one guy, his best friend Cody.

This seemed like a good place to start the novel, right when he’s figuring out the answers to some big questions he’s been wondering about for a while. Of course, the answers won’t slap him on the face but Cody does. He snaps him out of his daydreaming, they do some illicit activities together, and John has an epiphany.

Cody and John talk about birthday wishes in this scene, and John has a realization.

(It’s extremely possible these realizations will be a lot less shocking to you than they are to John.)

~

When we emerge on his grandparent’s front lawn, Cody makes an excited noise. “Hey, don’t I get a wish for birthdays?”

“You get a wish for your birthday, not my—”

“Too bad,” he talks over me. “I already know what I’m asking for.”

A billion dollars or a new car? Ending world hunger? A date with that gay YouTuber he always says is cute?

Cody smiles, lit by his grandparent’s porch light. “I wish that this is the year you finally realize how amazing you are.”

Suddenly I feel completely sober.

Once, my feelings and the labels that best define me seemed confusing. These days, the real issue comes from my readiness to acknowledge these inner truths. Maybe I’m just looking for a sign, a push, for the truth to slap me in the face until I can’t ignore it anymore.

The sincerity in Cody’s voice, how his lopsided smile looked so bright even in the dark… there’s another option to my life-long romantic questions. Why hadn’t I considered it before? I’ve been trying to decide whether I’m bi or in love with my best friend, but the answer seems so clear on the walk home. It’s both. I am bi and I love my best friend.

M/M Romance book review: Galen by Jaclyn Osborn

M/M Romance book review: Galen by Jaclyn Osborn

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. An angel and a regular human walk into an antique and curiosities store that the human owns and bicker over the ownership of a possibly possessed box. Oh, you haven’t heard this before?

Yeah, the premise of Galen feels fresh and intriguing, a unique spin for those looking for new takes on familiar paranormal romance stories.

Rating: 5 out of 5 possibly cursed rings (yikes!)

More than Demon but less than Angel

Angelic beauties who have heavenly origins fight against the forces of hell even though some think they should be damned too. When one of the fiercest warriors meets a hard to forget human, his strength and willpower are put to the ultimate test. Can an immortal angel love a human without it ending in tragedy?

Galen and his brothers are cursed because their fathers were Lucifer’s generals. They were taken early and trained to fight for heaven, though aren’t allowed in heaven. (Which is some BS if you ask me, but celestial leaders do not care what I think.) The brothers are the embodiment of deadly sins. Galen is wrath. Sometimes rage overcomes him and he loses self completely, he almost had to be put down because of it.

After learning the hard way, Galen has sworn to never love a human again. They all grow old and die while he doesn’t, so it’s too painful. Though there may be a way to ensure a bond with the right human doesn’t end in despair, though it involves a big sacrifice…

Fluffier than angel wings

Okay, there’s some angst over the nature of relationships between immortal beings/humans with short lifespans. And Galen has some anger issues. Plus, all the danger, secrets, and intrigue you might expect from matters of heaven and hell.

Yet somehow this novel is incredibly sweet, gooey and adorable. Sweeter than it has any right to be considering one part of the main couple is the embodiment of wrath and fighting his feelings every step of the way. Not that I’m complaining about any of this. Does it sound like I’m complaining? A little maybe. Let the record show: not complaining. It’s not the love story I was expecting, but the sweet human and his unshakeable connection with Galen balanced out the darker parts and it was very easy to get absorbed in this world.

While the romance at the core of the story is very sweet with lots of smut, there’s also a lot of action and adventure. Traveling to hell, epic sword fights, a lesson in demon cooking, all very exciting stuff.

A wild ride

The story is engaging also because of the vivid details the author uses. Osborn really makes everything come to life and the scene plays itself out in front of you.

Blame my ADHD brain, but I do get confused between the brothers. There are seven of them! Just make extra note of who is who at the beginning. Fortunately, they’ll probably become more familiar if you read the whole series.

Simon just wants to run his antique shop in peace. But then he finds a small mysterious box that’s (probably) haunted, and his shop is broken into by the hottest man he’s ever seen who then steals said creepy box. Now demons are after him and his only hope is to trust the tall, muscled, combat-boot-wearing thief who claims to be the son of a fallen angel.

Galen is charged with protecting humanity from dark forces. Cursed with Wrath, he’s hot-tempered and spends his days fighting demons and trying not to kill his six brothers when they irritate him.
His number one rule? Never fall in love. But then he meets Simon, a clumsy human who asks way too many questions and is—unfortunately—a total demon-magnet, and he starts breaking his own rules.

What’s inside the box, and why do the demons want it so badly? One thing is for sure… Simon can kiss his peaceful, ordinary life goodbye.

Book 1 in the Sons of the Fallen series. A low-angst urban fantasy MM romance featuring a grumpy half-angel and the human he swears he doesn’t like (he’s lying), seven warriors representing the deadly sins, a seaside mansion where they all live, banter, a snarky demon, and a HEA.

Growing up in a small town as a (presumably) straight guy, Luke Chambers has certain preconceived notions about gay people. He used to believe queer people were more flamboyant and easy to identify, but after frequently being hit over the head with the realization that this is not the case in One Little Word, it’s finally starting to sink in.

In this scene, Luke is working through his misconceptions. This is also called ‘revolutionary thoughts that actually aren’t that revolutionary at all.’ The scene is from One Little Word, and the box set for the first four books is available here.

“There are signs,” I tried slowly. “Clues that point to someone’s sexuality. There can’t just be nothing until suddenly, uh.” I puzzled my way through this as I spoke. “It doesn’t work that way. Because if there aren’t signs, then that means. That means anyone could be gay.”

“It’s true though,” she said.

“No, that can’t be right.” I laughed nervously. “Because if anyone could be gay—” I didn’t want to continue, but I also had to keep going. “If anyone could be gay, then that means I could be gay.”

Alicia nodded but showed no other reaction. The whole world turned upside down for me, but she just kept sitting next to me, eating her breakfast burrito.

“Aren’t you going to freak out?” I asked her.

“Oh no, oh no,” she replied in a monotone voice. “It’s the end of the world.”

“You’re a terrible actress.”

She smiled at me. “I’m actually a great actress.” She hooked her arm with mine and put her head on my shoulder companionably. “I just really don’t give a shit about your sexuality.”

Who knew it could be that easy?
