Where does inspiration come from? |
||||
|
And what inspires me to write? For some reason, I feel like I should have a cool answer to questions like these. Just like every superhero needs an epic origin story, maybe novels deserve the same. The truthful answer is I just think about things. Then I think about more things. All those things become a giant list of maybes until eventually the things I’m tossing around in my head stop being ideas and I actually get attached to them and then have to turn them into a story. It’s not a glamorous process.
Have you heard about the Midas touch or the Greek myth about King Midas? He wished that everything he touched turned to gold. Naturally, this went terribly. For example, food and people are two things that don’t do well as gold. This was the inspiration for the novel. Except instead of turning things to gold, anyone the cursed character touches gets a zap. Sometimes a big zap. But it turns out that King Midas has two Greek myths associated with him, which have almost nothing to do with each other. I had absolutely no idea about this until recently. It’s actually an amusing and very weird story.

Sexual Tension and Other Professional Dilemmas

In my magical M/M romance Strikes Twice, Marty is a new air wizard looking for a purpose and he’s convinced he can help a troubled man with a debilitating electrical curse. Az, cursed and cranky, has some doubts. They don’t get off on the right foot.
Here’s an excerpt from the novel. In this scene, Marty and Az are outside on the Primrose University campus and they’ve gotten off on the wrong foot. Well, technically they get off an incredibly sexy foot which then goes wrong, then really wrong—and now they’re at odds. Marty’s having some trouble acting professional while trying to convince Az he can handle himself around unpredictable magic energy. Then Az tests Marty’s resolve.

Marty
I can’t help but notice how hot Az looks in the sunlight. Who wears a leather jacket in the summer? He’s dressed in layers and black from head to toe. I tell myself he looks stupid, but…
At least six feet tall and packed with solid muscle, Az Serrano practically towers over me. His bronze skin must be a genetic gift because despite the summer season and sunny day, he’s extremely covered up. How is he not sweating and panting in the heat? Maybe his bad attitude fends off the heat. Isn’t he hot?
Yes, very hot, my brain supplies instantly. Not what I meant. Az should look hot temperature-wise, but instead, he looks sexy hot.
I force myself to focus and start clearing the air.
“You’re going to hear me out. This is professional.”
“Really?” That evil smirk and glint in his eyes only makes him less hot, I tell myself firmly. “Tell that to your eyes, they keep undressing me.”
“No, my eyes are doing no such thing. If anything, they’re putting more layers on you, Az. You must be delusional. Az the delusional ass. Has a nice ring, doesn’t it? Or maybe just Az the ass. Hey, Az…” Eager to get off this topic, I let the unusual name distract me. “What kind of name is Az, anyway?”
“Short for Azure,” he grits out because even pulling basic information out of him is apparently too much.
“Is that so, Azur—”
“Nope. Don’t even try. Only my tias and abuelas call me Azure. Are you my tia or my abuela, Marty?”
“Okay fine, just curious.” I raise my hands and remind him why I’m really here. “Let’s talk about the study you canceled.”
“You wouldn’t last a day on this study, so there’s no point in pretending otherwise.”
“I have what it takes to contribute,” I grit through clenched teeth.
“No, you’re an overconfident newbie who’s going to run away scared at the first unexpected zap.”
“Bring it on.”
“Oh yeah?” To test my resolve, the lunatic reaches out and touches my wrist, sending an electric shock coursing through my body. I grit my teeth. The jolt isn’t strong, but it’s a struggle to not react. Especially since the smartest thing for an air caster to do is to not get shocked.
But he needs to know he can’t scare me away that easily. I’m not running away. I’m not afraid of a challenge and I can do this job.
“See? I didn’t run away at the first unexpected shock.” I stand my ground, but he still doesn’t look impressed.
“Handling an unpredictable curse is vastly different from a single zap of electricity,” he says.
“Bring. It. On.” I repeat, not about to come this far and back down now.
“Fine, you think you can handle yourself around wild electricity? Prove it.”
—
And that’s all for now. Does Marty pass Az’s test? Do they play an absurdly serious game of tag on the campus lawn? Can Marty unravel the curse? Find out in Strikes Twice. This was a really fun one to write as Marty and Az are both so feisty and they wind each other up so easily.
Book Review: The Nøkk and The Jock
If you’re looking for a slice of life romance that involves a jock, a mysterious monster, and plenty of water-related shenanigans, then The Nøkk and The Jock might just be your next favorite read.
Summary: Brandon is an eager human who becomes one of the first students at the monster-filled Creelin University. His excitement quickly takes a turn when he discovers that his new roommate, a moody nøkk, a type of water spirit, is avoiding him. As Brandon tries to befriend his enigmatic roommate, he might accidentally use a bottle of vodka and a spider to initiate an ancient bonding ritual.
Nøkk Folklore: Dive into Norwegian Monsters
What’s particularly interesting about The Nøkk and The Jock is how it weaves in elements of Norwegian folklore. Nøkks are water spirits known for their powerful and often deceptive nature, and I love getting a look at the supernatural myths in other cultures. Nokks tend to drown people, but it’s not so simple for the monster in this story.
And one funny little detail I enjoyed was that the nøkk had a relative who was a rowboat, which is a very excellent strategy if you’re trying to drown someone and steal their soul.
Sweet Romance Amid Emo Vibes
This book is just absolutely adorable. A very sweet romance despite the emo vibes and threat of death.
It’s a cute little slice of life romance where both guys love the water and try not to fall for each other. When thrown together as roommates, the nokk and jock quickly want to be more than friends but the jock thinks he’s straight and the nokk is worried about stealing the jock’s soul.
The jock Brandon goes through a bi-awakening as he looks after his gloomy roommate and accidentally courts him. The nokk known as Steve has many issues, like being afraid to show his true form, and joining the swim team may not be the best idea when he’s worried about drowning people with his powers, but it all works out in the end. Brandon’s sunny outlook and Steve’s more moody demeanor makes for a great dynamic.
The Playlist: A Perfect Musical Accompaniment
And let’s not forget the fantastic playlist! Featuring tracks from My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, K.Flay, and AWOLNATION, I love the bonus playlist and it has some awesome alternative songs.
Author Leslie McAdam said her teenager created an ‘emo Norwegian boy playlist’ and apparently I am an emo Norwegian boy because the songs fit my musical tastes very well. I had no idea. Can I speak Norwegian now?
Survival of the Hottest
| This is the final battle in our quest to determine the better magical element, ice or earth. And since the score is currently tied, this will determine which element wins. Naturally, the most important question when deciding the better element (or anything else) is this: which side is sexiest? It’s like survival of the fittest, except survival of the hottest. So, let’s see whether ice or earth has the sexier characters. (And if you’re wondering why we’re doing this, the inspiration for this competition comes from my novel, The Frost or the Bite. The main character is a wizard who must decide between ice and earth magic, so we’re answering which is better for ourselves, for funsies.) |
Ice’s Sexiest Guys
| There are all kinds of frosty badasses with ice powers. There are so many that I was even able to select attractive characters who are in the queer realm. |
Captain Cold
| First is Leonard Snart from The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. He’s a thief turned hero who freezes stuff with a cold gun. Played by Wentworth Miller who is gay and possibly the most gorgeous person in existence, Cold is snarky and has chemistry with basically every single other character he comes into contact with. For simplicity’s sake, I’m just going to say that one or more versions of his character are somewhere in the range of pansexual and gay since I am terrible at keeping track of all the alternate timelines and dopplegangers. |
Iceman
| Iceman from the X-Men comics is a gay superhero who has basically all the ice powers ever. Shawn Ashmore plays him in the movies. For the longest time, I thought I was just terrible at telling him apart from his sibling Aaron Ashmore, but it turns out they’re identical twins. |
The Penguin

| Okay, maybe The Penguin doesn’t fit a conventional definition of sexy but I totally fell in love with him on Gotham. I’m not sure how a murdering, bloodthirsty crime boss can be such a sweetheart but he is just precious. (Or maybe I’m just demented to find him adorable.) I wish they’d have let him have a boyfriend but otherwise he was pretty perfect. |
‘Honorable’ Mention: Ice King
| Okay, this crazy ice wizard isn’t very sexy, or gay, but he lives in an ice lair and has penguin minions so that’s something. I’m mostly including him as an LOL candidate. And because I recently watched Fiona and Cake, which is very gay and apparently getting a second season, which makes me very happy. |
Earth Characters?
| Sometime in the middle of thinking of characters, I realized there was a clear winner. Earth just so obviously gets its ass kicked by ice here. The only legitimate earth-y character I could think of was Prince Sylvain from Nazri Noor’s Wild Hearts Series. And the less good options were Captain Planet and The Lorax. Are there any sexy icy characters I missed? Or were you better at thinking of some cool earth characters than I was? Let me know! |
The winner is… Ice!
| So ice won this round, which means that the ice element pulls ahead to beat earth. Ice wins, at least for us. But that doesn’t mean Jack will make the same decision in the novel The Frost or the Bite. Especially when he meets wolf shifter Ewan who is drawn to his earth magic. Will Jack pick ice too or will he go in a different direction? Find out now! |
Nymphs in Greek Mythology: Nature’s Divine Spirits
Not every Greek myth has stood the test of time and is remembered in the modern age, but one minor deity remains familiar today, the nymph. As alluring beauties with a connection to the natural world we see every day, it’s no wonder these supernatural sprites enchanted us mortals.
Nymphs are certainly more recognizable than some of their male counterparts (the male version of a water nymph is a potamoi. Who has ever heard of a potamoi before? Answer: nobody.) However, you may not know too much about the nymphs unless you’re a mythology buff.
I learned more about the nymphs when creating my own version of water nymphs for my magical M/M romance Where There’s Smoke. (My main character was a male nymph, which may have scandalized the ancient Greeks.)
Let’s learn more about these captivating creatures from Greek mythology.

What Are Nymphs?
These divine beings weren’t quite gods but definitely more than mere mortals. Nymphs were beautiful female nature spirits who embody the essence of the natural world, from rivers and forests to mountains and seas, and their existence is deeply intertwined with the environment they inhabit.
Basically, they were part personification and part guardian of the natural resource they represented.
Unlike the Olympian gods, nymphs were typically tied to specific locations or natural features. They weren’t immortal in the same way as the gods, but they lived incredibly long lives and remained forever young.
As described in Homer’s works, they were often portrayed as young, beautiful maidens who danced, sang, and wove alongside streams or in sacred groves. In ancient Greek art, nymphs were often depicted as beautiful young women carrying water jugs or dancing in groups.
Types of Nymphs:
Naiads: The Fresh Water Princesses
These water nymphs ruled over springs, rivers, and fountains. Famous naiad Arethusa’s story is particularly dramatic – she was transformed into a spring to escape the river god Alpheus’s unwanted advances. Talk about extreme measures to avoid a bad date! Naiads were known for their healing powers and were often associated with sacred springs that were believed to cure illnesses.

Dryads: The Tree Huggers
Dryads shared a unique bond with trees – their lives were literally intertwined with specific trees. These nymphs were considered the guardians of forests and groves, protecting their trees with fierce dedication.
The most famous dryad story is probably that of Daphne, who transformed into a laurel tree to escape Apollo’s pursuit. This isn’t just a nymph thing. Women turning into things to escape mythological men—or as a punishment for dalliances with mythological men—is a pretty standard occurrence. This leads me to believe life could be pretty rough for the more attractive Greek ladies.
Oreads: Mountain Mavens
Mountain nymphs or Oreads loved hanging out in rocky crags and mountain valleys. Echo, perhaps the most famous Oread, was a chatty mountain nymph who got on Hera’s bad side and became just a voice. Hera cursed her to only repeat others’ words after Echo helped Zeus hide his affairs. Her tragic love story with Narcissus is one of mythology’s most famous tales of unrequited love.
Oceanids and Nereids: Sea Sirens
These marine nymphs were daughters of Oceanus and Tethys (Oceanids) or Nereus and Doris (Nereids). Thetis was among the strongest of the nymphs as some sources assert that she led the Nerids, and she had to wed a mortal man because the gods feared how powerful her son would be otherwise.
That son of hers is another Greek figure still known to modern audiences, Achilles. And yes, I did have to use a picture of Achilles. Usually, I don’t focus on women on my blog too often, but my hands are kinda tied here in talking about nymphs since according to the Greeks there aren’t male nymphs. But I still write gay romance, something Achilles himself was known to indulge in, so yeah, the rules of life require him to get a special mention and picture.

Powers and Abilities
Nymphs weren’t just pretty faces hanging out in nature. Okay, they kind of were, but they do have some nifty supernatural skills like:
- Healing abilities (especially water nymphs)
- Control over natural elements
- The power to grant prophecies
- Shape-shifting abilities
- Extended lifespans
- Some could even bestow curses when angered
The last one is more of a rarity. Nymphs were usually mild-mannered and playful, but they could be inspired to engage in a little divine fury on occasion, usually when someone threatened or harmed the natural land or landmark they protected.
Nymphs in the Pantheon of Greek Mythology: A Step Below the Olympians
While they are celebrated as divine entities, they operate on a different level compared to the Olympian gods and goddesses, such as Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon. Nymphs are typically regarded as lesser deities or spirits, existing in the realm between mortals and the Olympian gods.
While nymphs are revered and often worshiped in local cults, they lack the omnipotence associated with the Olympians. Since nymphs and their powers are limited to their natural settings, this gives them roles as guardians rather than rulers. They wield power more localized in scope. For instance, a naiad governs the stream she resides in, while a dryad protects a specific grove of trees.
Answering to Greater Powers
Nymphs often act as attendants or companions to the greater gods, reflecting their subordinate status in the mythological hierarchy. For example, many tales feature nymphs serving as attendants to Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and wild nature. They accompany her in the woods and are typically portrayed as loyal followers of this formidable goddess.
Ritual and Belief
Nymphs weren’t just characters in stories – they were deeply woven into ancient Greek culture. Ancient Greeks took their nymph worship seriously.
People would leave offerings at springs and groves believed to be home to nymphs. Sometimes they built shrines called nymphaea near springs and grottos, where they’d leave offerings like honey, oil, and milk. Some of these sacred spots became major cultural centers, showing just how important nymphs were to daily Greek life.
Why Nymphs Matter Today
In a world where we’re increasingly disconnected from nature, these ancient nature spirits remind us of humanity’s deep connection to the natural world. Their stories speak to eternal themes: love, transformation, and our relationship with the environment around us.
Whether you’re a mythology enthusiast, a fantasy reader, or just someone who appreciates a good story, nymphs offer something fascinating to explore. Their tales continue to inspire writers, artists, and storytellers today, proving that these ancient nature spirits still have plenty to teach us about our relationship with the natural world.

Name Inspiration

I’ve become kind of a naming nerd and like picking names that mean something and have some relevance to the character.
Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. In this case, it worked so well for the icy folk in The Frost or the Bite. I went way overboard and had fun picking out icy names. For Jack, I went for the naming hat-trick with Jackson Alphin Blanchard. All those names, and Jack’s parents, relate to snow and ice in some way. Jack, for example, is a nod to Jack Frost. And Jackson Alphin Blanchard just sounds so upper crust and stuffy, which is perfect for where he comes from.
Naming Ewan did not go as smoothly. In fact, the name Ewan isn’t really referencing anything earthy or wolfy by itself. ‘Ewen’ spelled this way is a tree. I just liked Ewan better. Using Oakley for his last name was about the height of my creative ‘brilliance’ for naming him.
Terrible Superpowers
|
|
|
That’s what we’re trying to figure out. Why? In honor of my novel The Frost or The Bite where the main character must choose between ice and earth magic. We’re deciding which element is better for ourselves. In case you forgot, here’s the score after round one: Ice: 0 Earth: 1 When comparing the elements, a natural step is to wonder which one is stronger. I did briefly approach this as if it were a real topic of research and try to answer this question intellectually. I found an encyclopedia to look up powers and everything. (I should never approach things intellectually. Never goes well.) My research went off course pretty fast. I found myself just clicking on the fun sounding ones instead. Which brings us to the next category in this contest. Not which is stronger but which has the better most useless power. I tried to find two of the most nonsense powers, one in earth, one in ice, and let’s look at which has the most ridiculous one. (I had fun with this and I hope you do too, but if not, we’re looking at who has the hottest characters next time.) |
Ice’s Most Useless Power: Ice Cream Mimicry |
|
Ice cream mimicry is defined as ‘transforming into or having a physical body made of ice cream.’ The power is mostly used by characters who look like or are ice cream cones, like a character on the Amazing World of Gumball or certain Pokemon like Vanillish. (There are over a dozen characters with this power, but those are the two examples I was even remotely familiar with.) My favorite way to think of this power is by someone pretending to be ice cream. Why? No clue! Maybe they want to know what it’s like to be a bowl of rocky road. Or maybe when trying to hide from a lactose intolerant person and so being ice cream makes you safe from them. There’s just something so sweet and innocent about pretending to be ice cream. No pun intended. It’s useless in a fight but undeniably awesome, in a useless way. And this is less sweet, but I found it hilarious that under limitations in the encyclopedia it says ‘user may simply be eaten.’ |
Earth’s Most Useless Power: Earth Swimming
Okay, I picked powers that sound ridiculous, but earth swimming is actually pretty useful. It gives the user the ability to swim through the ground and earth like it was water. Since the real world isn’t Minecraft, going deep into the ground just by doing the backstroke must be pretty useful.
So earth swimming has uses, except in the way I’m imagining it. Earth swimming makes me think of somebody swimming in a big pile of dirt, which someone with this ability could also do.
I’m picturing a person being like, “I’m not going to the pool today. I’m just gonna do laps around the sandbox in the backyard.” And the power to swim in a sandbox is undeniably lame.
The only known user I was vaguely familiar with from the list is a white defender like this from Hollow Knight.
The Winner

Calling it earth swimming makes it sound lame and silly as hell. More useful, yes, but come on, ice cream mimicry! Gotta give the win to ice cream mimicry.
This brings the total for our ice vs. earth competition to… a tie!
Ice: 1 Earth: 1
Next time, we’ll get into the real stuff. Like who has the hotter men. No, sexier. Because ice characters aren’t hot because they’re cold.
Since this is an M/M romance blog, all characters will be of the M variety.
